Ford introduced the fifth generation Thunderbird’s in 1967. For this generation, Ford wanted to create some space between the two-door Thunderbird coupe and the recently introduced Ford Mustang. As such, the Thunderbird was moved upmarket to become a luxury model inline with Lincoln standards. This would be a sign of thing to come with the Thunderbird sharing platforms with the Lincoln and Continental Mark 3. The new Thunderbird switched from unibody construction to body-on-frame construction with sophisticated rubber mountings between the body and frame to reduce noise and vibration. In breaking with tradition, the convertible model was eliminated and the Thunderbird now offered a four-door model, which used suicide doors for rear seat passengers. The new design of the Thunderbird featured a gaping, fighter jet-inspired grille opening that incorporated hidden headlights.
